With the basketball season well under way, the Dallas Mavericks are in full swing.  The games are fun, energetic and LOUD……just the way you want your sports event to be.  This week the Dallas Mavericks take on the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight at the AAC beginning at 7:30 p.m. and the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, January 16^th at 7:00 p.m.

Now that the lockout for hockey season is over, you can rest assured you’ll see some fierce competition for this shortened season.  For those hockey fans just waiting for the Dallas Stars to take the ice, your wait is over.  The Stars will open the 2012-2013 National Hockey League regular season, and their 20^th year in Texas, at home against the Phoenix Coyotes, this Saturday, January 19^th.  Be on the lookout for some of your favorite faces as well as some new ones as the Stars heat up the ice!

This is the last week for the Chinese Lantern Festival at Historic Fair Park.  If you missed it during the Texas State Fair, then you are definitely being given a second chance to witness this beautiful exhibit.  It’s an exotic visual delight – a collection of architecture, fabric flora, and fauna, including pandas, flamingos, and dinosaurs.  There’s even a dragon made from 15,000 porcelain dishes.

The festival lights up the night, setting the lagoon and imaginations aglow.  The Temple of Heaven, Statue of Liberty, animated creatures, and a huge Blossoming Lotus are among the 22 dazzling lantern sets next to the Nature and Science Buildings.

If outdoor activity sounds a little too chilly, then maybe you should try cheering on the Dallas Mavericks as they take on the Hornets of New Orleans, on Saturday, January 5^th at the American Airlines Center.  It may be cold outside, but inside the AAC its hot action and high stakes as Dirk Nowitzki and all the rest of your favorite Mavs players continue their quest to regain the NBA title.

By this time, we’ve all been to our share of Christmas parties, luncheons at work, happy hours and family get togethers to last a lifetime.  If you feel the need to do something not remotely resembling Christmas but still fun and educational, you must stop in at the new Perot Science Museum and see what all the buzz is about.

The new Perot Museum of Nature and Science will stimulate your curiosity and regenerate your brain.  The museum has five floors housing eleven permanent exhibit halls containing state-of-the-art video and 3D computer animation with thrilling, life-like simulations where visitors can exercise their brains through hands-on activities, interactive kiosks and educational games. The extraordinary building and outdoor space serves as a living science lesson, offering provocative illustrations of engineering, technology and conservation.

One of the best things about the museum is its 297 seat, multimedia 3D theater.  The whole family will enjoy the 60 minute presentation of “Meerkats” as it follows an extraordinary – not to mention adorable – family that stands just 12 inches tall. Discover how these tiny but strong creatures survive in the harsh desert, led by the family’s tenacious matriarch, Klinky. Her daunting task is to both protect the offspring she has as well as produce more pups to ensure the family’s survival for generations to come. Together, this family of 20 will battle a rival gang to protect their territory, their pups and their lives as they also contend with the desolate environment which is their home.

Also playing is the 60 minute presentation of “Sea Monsters”.  This short film follows the discovery of strange bones in a muddy Kansas river bank and the investigation into the mystery buried in time.  You’ll travel back to the Late Cretaceous period where the sea was denominated by giant marine reptiles, some as large as present day whales.  Mixing ultra-realistic 3-D computer animation and live action recreations of actual paleontological digs, this is a must see film for all ages.

As I’ve said before, there’s never a shortage of fun and entertaining things to do in Dallas, even after the Holidays are a distant memory.
